You've been highly professional during the interview process and have landed the job. Now it's time to be just as professional in resigning from your current employer. Do not put off the inevitable. That only puts more stress on you and your employer. Give your notice immediately unless there is a financial reason to wait. Make an appointment with your manager and prepare a brief letter of resignation (Sample of a resignation letter below). Your MRINetwork Executive Search Consultant can help you with the wording. During the meeting, calmly and concisely explain your decision and make it clear it is final. Remember the reasons you started looking around to begin with. Your existing employer does not have to know where you are going to be employed next. If they push you for an answer, just reply that you are considering a few different options but your decision to leave is final. Having your statement written and presenting it to the proper authority will make your points for you. Do this before you start talking about your resignation. Only discuss your resignation with the people that need to know and request confidentiality. The fewer people involved the easier the transition. Retain your poise if the meeting becomes tense. Burning bridges is not an option. Be wary of a counteroffer. While it may be flattering, there are drawbacks (10 Reasons to reject a counteroffer). Is the counteroffer a ploy to avoid short-term inconvenience (replace you on their time schedule not yours)? Will your career track remain blocked? Will you still be reporting to a person you distrust? Will your responsibilities be expanded? Have others who've accepted counteroffers in your company been fairly treated? If your answers to any of these questions are not positive, then it's time to move on. Remember that your first decision is most likely your best decision. If a counteroffer puts you in a dilemma, contact your MRINetwork Executive Recruiter for advice. |
